Boost for local history in the far north

Shetlands' new archives

With the opening of the new £11.6m Shetland Museum & Archives at the beginning of June 2007, local history in the UK’s most northerly islands has been given a real boost. Sited in Lerwick’s historic Hay’s Dock, the building includes a timber-clad three-storey high sail-shaped Boat Hall housing five historic boats tracing the history of the Shetland boat from its Viking roots through to the present day. Also on display are over 3,000 artefacts, from a working lighthouse optic, to delicate Fair Isle knitting and Shetland lace, and treasures of archaeology from the Picts, Vikings and all those who have inhabited the islands over the centuries. Open Museum: Mon–Sat 10am–5pm, Sun 12–5pm; Archives: Mon–Wed & Fri 9.30am–5.00pm, Thu & Sat 10am–5pm, for more information visit www.shetland-museum.org.uk.
