Ickworth House, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, has begun the first stages of an exciting new project, called ‘Real Lives: Ickworth Past and Present’, to reinterpret the history of the basement in the Rotunda building. The area included a banqueting kitchen, domestic offices and a servants’ hall. Following a generous project planning grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, research has started and Ickworth is now appealing for people to come forward with any memories, or memorabilia they have concerning Ickworth, from the last century or earlier. Anything connected to the House and its estate, particularly the people who worked ‘below stairs’ are being sought . National Trust staff would like to talk to anyone who has direct memories, or even family and friends who had experience of Ickworth House and the Ickworth estate, especially from former employees who worked in the House or on the estate, particularly from when the house and estate were still inhabited by the Hervey family. The National Trust hopes to turn back the clock in Ickworth’s basement to reveal how it once functioned, adding an exciting, fresh dimension to what visitors see and experience. If you have any memories to share or memorabilia connected with Ickworth and in particular the servants' quarters, please contact Jenny Troll, tel: 01284 736122 or Karen Chancellor, tel: 01284 747568, email: karen.chancellor@nationaltrust.org.uk.
