Wherever you seem to look, local history, despite its popularity, struggles to attract sufficient volunteers, as the following item in the April–June 2008 issue of the Avon Local History & Archaeology Newsletter well demonstrates: ‘With great regret, we announce the resignation, for health reasons, of Mike Whitton, our Chair since 2001. He was constant in attendance at Committee, AGM and Study Days, and his businesslike but genial management has been much appreciated. 'As a consequence, Elizabeth White has agreed to be our Chair until the next AGM. This leaves Bill Evans still acting as Secretary as well as Treasurer and Membership Secretary, (and proof-reader, printer and poster of this journal). Any offer to relieve him of the Secretaryship will be very welcome.'
