Historic Scotland has decided to give £30,000 annually to the War Memorials Trust for distribution as grants to eligible conservation projects on free-standing war memorials such as obelisks and crosses. The new scheme will fund up to 75% of the total eligible cost of repair and conservation work on free-standing war memorials, with a maximum of £7,500 per project. A maximum of £5,000 will come from Historic Scotland funding whilst the rest will be paid for by the War Memorials Trust through its own fundraising. War Memorials Trust President Winston S Churchill says ‘The War Memorials Trust is delighted to be working with Historic Scotland to promote the protection and conservation of war memorials. The Trust has helped many communities in Scotland during its first decade and looks forward to being able to support many more through this new grant scheme. It is particularly appropriate that this scheme is launched in 2008, a year in which the nation will mark the 90th Anniversary of the end of World War One’. Other memorials in Scotland, such as plaques, stained glass windows or church furnishings, will continue to be eligible for funding through the War Memorials Trust Small Grants Scheme. The Black Watch War Memorial (left and above) in Edinburgh was restored with the help of a £2,500 grant received under War Memorials Trust’s general Small Grants Scheme before the launch of this new scheme in collaboration with Historic Scotland. For future projects of a similar nature there will now be a lot more funds available. © War Memorials Trust. |
